Jain Temples: Popular Pilgrimage Destinations in Jaisalmer

The Jain Temples of Jaisalmer are a true testament to the rich historical and religious heritage of this desert city. Dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries, these temples are not only architectural marvels but also hold immense religious significance. Crafted intricately in the Dilwara Style using yellow sandstone, the temples are adorned with captivating animal and human figures that leave visitors in awe. Dedicated to various Jain Thirthankars (Hermits), these temples attract thousands of pilgrims every year.

Interconnected Seven Beautiful Jain Temples:
Nestled within the Jaisalmer Fort, the seven Jain temples are a sight to behold. Each temple is dedicated to a different Thirthankar, including Rishabdev, Chandraprabhu, Parshvanath, and Sambhavnath. The first temple, built in 1509, belongs to the eighth Thirthankar, Chandraprabhu, and features magnificent sculptures in the mandapa. Adjacent to it is the Rishabdev temple, known for its beautiful pillar adorned with gods and apsaras. Behind the Chandraprabhu temple lies the Parasnath temple, with its intricately carved entrance depicting the image of a Jain Thirthankara at its apex.

A small door to the south leads to the temple of the tenth Thirthankar, Shitalnath, where the idol is made from eight precious metals and serves as the center of attraction. The northern wall’s door leads to the dim chamber of Sambhavanth. The remaining two temples, Kunthunath and Shantinath, were built in 1536. Additionally, there is an underground library called Gyan Bhandar, which houses priceless manuscripts and ancient texts. While the temples remain open all day for Jain pilgrims, there are time restrictions for tourists. It is important to note that shoes, food items, and leather items are strictly prohibited within the temple premises. To truly immerse yourself in the heritage and history of Jain culture, a visit to the Jain temples of Jaisalmer is a must.
